Modern Warfare 3 - Steam Support

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be fully supported by Steam, meaning you're forced to use Steam on PC.

Valve has confirmed the news, that Modern Warfare 3 will be Steam only on PC. So Activision has decided to cooperate with Valve, unlike Electronic Arts who stopped all their cooperation with them.
MW3 will feature Steamworks, too, meaning the game can be pre-ordered via Steam to pre-download it. That means you can instantly play on release day and patches will be downloaded automatically as well.

Disadvantage is, if Steam is offline or similar, the player can't start the game. Further will VAC be used as anti cheat tool.

Good news is, that Modern Warfare 3 will support dedicated servers. MW3 will be released November 8 for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

Battlefield 3 - The Weapon Customization

Dice explained the weapon customization in Battlefield 3 to create your own weapon of choice. BF3 will be released October 28, 2011.

On the left, the rifle has been equipped with a bipod heavy barrel, and a 4X magnification combat scope to aim for medium to long range targets, or even suppressive fire to help your team.

On the right, the scope was removed for a quick acquisition holographic scope. A suppressor and foregrip were added as well to fit your combat role and play style in small maps and close combats for example.

There are 50 weapons in Battlefield 3 with some basic values like muzzle speed, energy, and fire rate. But each gun has three main accessory slots to change. The more you play with a weapon, the more weapon accessories you'll unlock to customize your weapon to be prepared for every situation. Your arsenal contains thousands of options for different weapons to create, a 12X scope for long range snipers, or suppressors for stealth operations.

The weapon modifications include different optics, suppressors, bipods, barrels, underslung grenade launchers, underslung shotguns, flashlights, foregrips, laser sights, and even more.

I played Battlefield 3 twice at Gamescom 2011, here's the story.

Before and after the opening

The first day we went really early to Gamescom so the booth of Battlefield 3 wasn't opened yet. We made the left picture you see above. 10 AM the Gamescom opened their doors for normal people without press card and 5 minutes after the booth was very crowded, as you can see in the right picture. To entertain all the people in the queue, some EA girls gave iPad 2s to play Monopoly. The problem was that you had to wait up to eight hours to play 20 minutes of Battlefield 3. Fortunately, I just had to wait 30 minutes.

First of all the twelve minutes long Fault Line trailer was shown, followed by an instruction video of the different classes and the conquest mode. After that we were able to play on 64 PCs the multiplayer map Caspian Border in Iraq, with jets, helicopters and a lot of tanks. In my opinion, the helicopters are a bit overpowered so far because soldiers on foot could be killed in seconds without greater aiming.

Jet Flying was awesome. With speed and strength combined you had the feeling that the map wasn't limited and you would just fly over the world shooting people and helicopters. These could be taken down within seconds with the jets - without being unbalanced because against single soldiers the aiming was really tough.

Battlefield 3 will be released Octiber 27 for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.

[Review] Gamescom 2011 - Diablo 3

I was lucky to play Diablo III twice at Gamescom 2011 with every character.

First, I chose the Demon Hunter to battle through the fitst dungeon, which looked like the picture above but with more fire creatures, for example the "Inferno Zombie". The demon hunter had a Damage-Over-Time single arrow, including 125% weapons damage, and an explosion arrow, which really blowed the zombie's head off, and after a level up I could learn the Multishot to shoot at several enemies with a single ability. So far, the demon hunter uses Mana like the Wizard.

The Barbarian was pretty slow and agressive to play with high damage but slow attack speed and movement speed, just like you would imagine him to play.

The Wizard had the most damage output but with very low hit points to survive. After a Frost Nova you could explode the area around you to send the zombies back to hell or you were able to shoot with your wand at a single target.

The Witch Doctor was the easiest character to play with his pets. You could create them from corpses and send them to attack your enemy and you were shooting with poisoned arrows, no problem to survive a huge number of enemies.

The Monk is an excellent melee fighter with his skills to kill several enemies at once. There were no problem to survive ten Inferno Zombies or more without even noticing getting any critical damage.

Finishing the Inquisitor as final boss completed your quest and you went on fighting at the surface. After some bridges like above you entered "Leoric's Hold", the next dungeon which had a lot of prison cells and ghosts in them. To free them you just had to unlock the doors and fight the final endboss of the dungeon, the Warden. Unfortunately, this was the end of the Gamescom 2011 demo of Diablo 3.

Dead Island - Gold

Dead Island has gone gold. The release of the zombie shooter is September 9, 2011 for PC, Xbox and PS3.

Techland has announced that their first person zombie shooter Dead Island has gone gold, which means the game is finished and is ready for production. Conclusion is the game will be released in time, September 9, 2011. Unfortunately, Dead Island will NOT be released in Germany due to massive violence and blood. But an Austrian (österreichische) version will be made, said publisher Deep Silver.
The game is set on Banoi, a famous island for holidays full of infected zombies. The difference between games like Left 4 Dead is the amount of zombies. In Dead Island there will be less but stronger and more challenging zombies. The single player campaign can be finished in 25 hours.

Another feature of Dead Island is the variety of weapons available, and even whole new weapons can be created by the player himself, electrical machetes for example.  Special slots are implemented for faster access to them. The player is also able to choose between different characters who can be specialized as you want. Each of them has their own abilities, advantages or disadvantages in a battle.
A co-op mode will be incuded as well.

Markus "Notch" Persson said in an interview with Develop-Online that he has no interest in this deal at all. Their both intentions were way too different to work together, although Notch likes EA's games and would play them, too. The deal is off.
